Lancaster Sign Ordinance as it pertains to EVERYONE..everyone.. EVERYONE!

So after my (now) weekly broadcast at The BLVD Today Cafe this weekend I met my family on the BLVD for a stroll and lunch. Something we immediately noticed is that someone had taped a hand written "Yard Sale" sign on one of the very nice  street lights on the BLVD. I was compelled to remove the sign, but quickly decided it was not my place to interfere with it as it was not a commercial advertisement nor was it directly on the Blvd. We leisurely walked our way to BEX where we had lunch and then walked down to Caramel Pastries for desserts.

On our way back we stopped at the Ceder Street Art Gallery to see what they had on display and really enjoyed the works on display. It was also very nice to see Mayor Parris visiting the Art Gallery and  walking up and down the BLVD talking with residents and business owners. To my amazement on the way back to our cars we noticed that just about every street light pole on the BLVD had been plastered with multiple fliers from businesses and/or organizations on the BLVD. I was REALLY annoyed by this and wanted to flag down Mayor Parris to discuss it, but lost sight of his location. Later we saw him speaking with the offending business owner, but I don't know if he was aware of the fliers. I'm not passing judgment on Mayor Parris about this as he was more than likely on a meet and greet stroll and not playing community services code enforcement officer.

With that I will just say that the community (and business owners especially) needs to be aware of the city ordinances and follow them. They are in place for a reason and the sign ordinance is there to maintain a specific look and feel for our community. I personally don't like to see tape leaves hanging from every street and traffic sign in the Antelope Valley. The city has spent over 10 million dollars to improve the BLVD for us, the least we can do is do our part to keep it clean.

Lancaster Zoning ordinance on Signs 17.12.140 - Signs

Additionally Code Enforcement has written an easy to understand summary of Sign regulations:

Code Enforcement pdf

KEY statement:

17.12.150 (B) PROHIBITED SIGNS

The following signs shall be prohibited in the C zone and may not be included in any sign plan.

17.12.150(B)(2)
Any notice, placard, bill, card, poster, sticker, banner, sign, advertising, or other device calculated to attract
attention of the public which any person posts, prints, sticks, stamps, tacks, or otherwise affixes, or causes the
same to be done to or upon any street, right of way, public sidewalk, crosswalk, curb, lamppost, hydrant, tree,
telephone pole, or lighting system, or upon any fixture of the police or fire alarm system of the City of Lancaster or the County of Los Angeles.

So print out the above pdf and keep it on hand. Consider it the next time you want to advertise your event on the BLVd or anywhere in the Antelope Valley.

Thank you.

I was handed one flier by a child, but there is little doubt that the actions of the installers were by request of the supervision. I'm not trying to start a nanny state or anything, just thought it would be nice to have all of the people know and follow the rule for sake of keeping the BLVD looking good..

I'm a believer in the idea that if you keep up on the small stuff that it keeps the big stuff in check.

Great Idea Adam have you suggested that to the city?  So the flyers were from children that dont know better, where was the supervision?

One of the fliers I think was for the Art Show and the other was for a shop that sells misc trinkets for skaters, etc.

Which brings the point that maybe the city could put up a few public boards at each end of the blvd with location of each store and a place for events to be posted?..

Well I might have to go down there today and see, if they are still there I have no problem taking them down and taking a copy of the ordinance to the person that did this. Maybe they dont know. As a Realtor we are allowed one open house sign and has to be regestered with the cities and can only be up in certain spots.
